Etymology edit

(Lingewaard) First attested as apud tornacum towards the end of the 11th century. Etymology uncertain. Potentially a relic from a pre-Germanic substrate language. It is unlikely that the toponym is derived from Doornik in Belgium or from a Celtic word with an -acum suffix. Compare Indoornik.

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˈdoːr.nɪk/
  • Hyphenation: Door‧nik

Proper noun edit

Doornik n

  1. Tournai, a town in Hainaut, Belgium.
  2. A hamlet in Lingewaard, Gelderland, Netherlands.
