Etymology edit
First attested as enghelum in 1319. Derived from a compound of Old Frisian Engel (“a personal name”) or *Angla (“Angles, a Germanic people”) and hēm (“home, settlement”). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name. Compare Englum.
