Potentially attested as fotdenheim [read: foldenheim] in 944, attested with certainty as foldeghum in 1422. Borrowed from West Frisian Foudgum, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian Foldo (“a personal name”) and hēm (“home, settlement”).
