editFirst attested as Geerstroet in 1568. Compound of the microtoponym Geere (etymologically related to geer (“wedge shaped piece of land”)) and stroet (“marshy place overgrown with brushwood”). The second element was eventually reinterpreted as straat (“street”). Compare Laarstraat.
