Etymology edit
First attested as Grootgenhout and Kleyngenhout in 1557. Derived from a compound of the dative singular form of the definite article ge and hout (“rising deciduous forest”). The village used to be composed of two sections, Groot Genhout ("Great Genhout") and Klein Genhout ("Small Genhout"). It is now considered a single village.
