Häfn
Bavarian edit
Pronunciation edit
Etymology 1 edit
From Middle High German haven, from Old High German havan, hafan. Probably related to hebn, ultimately from Proto-West Germanic *habbjan. Compare also German Häfen and Hafner.
Alternative forms edit
- Hafa (West Central Bavarian)
- Hafn (Southern Bavarian, Tyrol)
Noun edit
Häfn m or n (plural Häfn, diminutive Häferl) (East Central Bavarian, Vienna, Southern Bavarian, Carinthia)
Etymology 2 edit
Uncertain. Either the same as etymology 1 or from Middle High German habene, habe (in which case cognate with German Hafen, Dutch haven, and English haven) or a conflation of both.
