Etymology edit

First attested as hengorden around 1300. Etymology uncertain. Unlikely to be a compound of a term cognate to hangen (hang) (here designating an incline) and voorde (ford, crossing). The second element may be woerd (artificial hill meant for habitation). Compare Hengelder, Hengelo and Hengevelde.
