Etymology edit
First attested as zwaluwe in 1291. Derived from hoog (“high, upper”) and the hydronym Zwaluwe, which in turn derives from Proto-Germanic *swel- (“swell, bloat”). The element hoog was added to distinguish the settlement from Lage Zwaluwe. Compare Swalmen.
