From Ottoman Turkish اصفهان (İsfahān) and Classical Persian اِصْفَهَان (isfahān), ultimately from Old Persian *spādānaʰ (army, adj.) or *spādānām (of the armies), from 𐎿𐎱𐎠𐎭 (spādaʰ, army),[1] from Proto-Iranian *cwáHdaH (army), q.v.
