First attested as Yoersterp in 1543. Borrowed from West Frisian Jousterp, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian Jorre (“a personal name”), Jou or Jouwe and terp (“artificial mound used for habitation”). Compare Jouswerd and Jouswier.
