Dutch edit

Etymology edit

First attested as Pekart [read: De Kart] in 1567. Borrowed from West Frisian Kaard, of uncertain etymology. Potentially derived from kaar (osier, Salix viminalis) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -t or, alternatively a compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian werd (artificial mound used for habitation). Compare Teerd and Tjaard.
