Kaard
Dutch edit
Etymology edit
First attested as Pekart [read: De Kart] in 1567. Borrowed from West Frisian Kaard, of uncertain etymology. Potentially derived from kaar (“osier, Salix viminalis”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -t or, alternatively a compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian werd (“artificial mound used for habitation”). Compare Teerd and Tjaard.
