- As a German surname, variant of Karsch, from Middle Low German karsch (“merry, lively”), a scant attested Germanic word related to Old Norse karskr (“agile, fresh”), derived by Pokorny from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ger- (“to awake”), see also Ancient Greek ἐγείρω (egeírō), Albanian ngre.
- As a Lower Sorbian surname, Germanized from Kaš, shortened from Łukaš (see Lukas).
