Etymology

From kyrkje (“church”) +‎ nes (“headland”), a calque of Danish Kirkenæs, referring to a church on the place built in 1862. Replaced the older names Pisselvnes and Håkjerringnes. Cognate with Icelandic Kirkjunes.
