From Spanish La Brea, from la (“the”)+brea (“tar, pitch”).
- (Los Angeles): Coined by Gaspar de Portolá in 1769 as Los Volcanes de Brea (The Tar Volcanoes), from the tar geyers found in the tar swamp that now exist as the La Brea Tar Pits park.
- (Trinidad): From the asphalt lake and tar seeps found on the island of Trinidad by Spanish conquistadors.
