editFirst attested as Laag Heukelum in 1838-1857. Compound of laag (“low, lower”) and a secondary compound derived from Proto-Germanic *hukila (“hill, elevated place”) and heem (“home, settlement”). The element laag was added to distinguish the settlement from Hoog-Heukelom. Compare Heukelom, Heukelum and Hoekelum.
