First attested as lumirs in 1208. Potentially derived from a hydronym derived in turn from the term *lum (mud) from an unknown substrate language. Alternatively derived from Latin *Limarias, a toponym derived from limus (mud, sludge). Compare Lomm, Lomme and Lommel.
