From Arabic يَهُودِيّ(yahūdiyy, Jew, Jewish). The definite form اَلْيَهُودِيّ (al-yahūdiyy) underwent assimilation -ly--ll- (compare illum from il-jum), whence a new basic form *lahūdī, *lhūdī by backformation.
