Etymology edit

First attested as lihdanfurt in 944. Borrowed from West Frisian Lichtaard, derived in turn from a compound of Proto-Germanic *leuhtan- (“light, bright”) (potentially referring to the soil or vegetation near the settlement) and Old Frisian wert (“terp, artificial mound used for habitation”).
