First attested as leonghem in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Leons, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian Lieuwe (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and hēm (home, settlement). The element hēm disappeared with time.
