Etymology edit

First attested as to lunen in 1287. Etymology uncertain. Potentially of non-Germanic origin. Tentatively linked to Proto-Indo-European *leu- (mud) or *lu-. This would suggest that the toponym is derived from an ancient hydronym. Compare Loenen and Loenen aan de Vecht.

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˈly.nə(n)/
  • Hyphenation: Lu‧nen
  • Rhymes: -ynən
