editFrom Ukrainian Львів (Lʹviv), from Old East Slavic Лвовъ (Lvovŭ) or Львовъ (Lĭvovŭ), originally named after the founder's son, Левъ (Levŭ), Lev I of Galicia (ca. 1228 – ca. 1301).
Compare Belarusian Львоў (Lʹvoŭ), Polish Lwów, Russian Львов (Lʹvov), Slovak Ľvov, Middle Armenian Իլով (Ilov), Armeno-Kipchak Իլօվ (Ilōv).
