Mahometus
Latin
editAlternative forms
editEtymology
editBorrowed from Arabic مُحَمَّد (muḥammad), likely via a variety of Arabic that had the first two vowels methathesized; for example, Andalusian Arabic مَحُمَّدْ (“maḥummad”). The penultimate vowel is presumed long from the inherited stress of the descendant languages.

- (modern Italianate Ecclesiastical) IPA(key): /ma.oˈme.tus/, [mäoˈmɛːt̪us]
