Dutch edit

Etymology edit

First attested as mamelmes in 1243. Potentially derived from Gallo-Roman Latin *Mamilo (a personal name) suffixed with -acum. An alternative etymology proposes a derivation from *Mamilo and mansum (farmstead, homestead).

See also Central Franconian Mameles.

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˈmaː.mə.lɪs/
  • Hyphenation: Ma‧me‧lis

Proper noun edit
