Etymology

edit

The place is named after the River Mayenne, probably of Celtic origin, from Proto-Celtic *madyeti (to burst, spread); alternatively, from Latin madeo (to be wet). Both are ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂d- (to be wet, moist).
