Dutch edit

Etymology edit

First attested as meerenvort in 1430. Compound of Middle Dutch mede (middle, mid-) and voorde (ford, crossing). As there is no river near the settlement, it is possible that voorde is used here in the rarer sense of "dry road running through a humid area".

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˈmeː.dəˌvoːrt/
  • Hyphenation: Me‧de‧voort

Proper noun edit

Medevoort n

  1. A hamlet in Helmond, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands.
