Dutch edit

Etymology edit

Potentially attested as widemortele in 1263, attested with certainty as Memortel in 1838-1857. If the oldest attestation does in fact refer to the current settlement, then the toponym is a compound derived from Middle Dutch wede (forest, brushwood) and mortel (low-lying muddy place).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /meːˈmɔr.təl/
  • Hyphenation: Mee‧mor‧tel
  • Rhymes: -ɔrtəl

Proper noun edit

Meemortel n

  1. A hamlet in Cranendonck, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands.
