Etymology

From Middle Dutch marwede, from Old Dutch Meriwido, Merewede, *Meriwidu, a compound of meri (lake, sea) + *widu (wood). An older, outdated, explanation derives it from an earlier Merwe or Merowe, meaning "wide water".
