Doesn't work with consonant + ಐ

edit

@AleksiB 1945 This doesn't seem to work with a consonant plus ಐ, where the inherent vowel of the consonant is suppressed. Example, for ಕ + ಐ = ಕೈ, giving the following error:

For posterity, in the event the error is fixed and the above no longer shows the error, the text of the error is as follows:

Lua error: attempt to concatenate field '?' (a nil value)‎

The Unicode character in question is (U+0CC8).

If you know how to fix this, please do. Currently, all three entries at Category:Requests for pronunciation in Kannada entries lack IPA pronunciations because of this error. Brusquedandelion (talk) 08:35, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Looking at the code- I think the issue is that vowel_diacritics does not have a mapping for ೈ. I believe if an IPA mapping for this vowel diacritic were added here, it would fix the problem.
As for what that should be- I'm not sure if IPA(key): ɐi̯ or IPA(key): ɐj is more appropriate. Thoughts? Brusquedandelion (talk) 08:38, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Looking more closely at the code, it seems that vowel_diacritics currently contains a mapping between and /ɐi̯/. I'm not entirely sure what ೖ is actually used for. I am guessing it is some marginal character that has its own Unicode point value but that does not normally appear in the process of writing standard Modern Kannada. The diacritic that corresponds to /ɐi̯/ is . If you make this switch, it should fix the bug. Although I am not certain if should be retained, possibly with the same or some other IPA value... does anyone know what this symbol is used for?
