Meilin

edit

@Mx. Granger How is it pronounced? — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 23:07, 15 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

[ta ŋa tʰam] (falling-rising-rising). —Granger (talk · contribs) 23:29, 15 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Mx. Granger: I'd go with 打 for the first character then. Just to confirm, is it the same pronunciation as 打 in other contexts, e.g. 打人, 打交哩 (to fight)? — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 23:35, 15 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
I initially wrote 打 (thinking that the pronunciation seemed similar and the meaning was plausible enough, like 打招呼 or 打牙骹), but when I asked later, my informant said it's not the same pronunciation as 打 in other contexts. I asked if it sounded like any other words, and all she could think of was onomatopeia (滴答滴答). —Granger (talk · contribs) 23:41, 15 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Mx. Granger: So is the only difference from the tone? — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 23:47, 15 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
I believe so. —Granger (talk · contribs) 23:51, 15 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Mx. Granger: I think the only other falling tone in Wuhua would be 去聲. Could you ask your informant if it has the same tone as 去, 再, 做, etc.? — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 00:10, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
I will. —Granger (talk · contribs) 00:50, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Justinrleung Same tone as 去 etc., yes. She also gave me a synonym: 講嘴里.
(A side note: the word 听 is also 去声 in Meilin, but our entry gives it as a different tone. If I'm understanding correctly, 廣東五華客家話比較研究 also seems to give 听 as 去声 in Shuizhai, Huacheng, and Changbu. Is this a mistake in our entry, or is this pronunciation of 听 limited to Wuhua?) —Granger (talk · contribs) 02:07, 19 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Mx. Granger: Thanks! I think for /ta/, we should follow 臺灣客家語常用詞辭典 and use 喥, defined as 誇言也. 客家话词典 seems to write it as 咑 in the word 咑咑跳 (= 形容说话声音很响). 五华客家话研究 doesn't have a character for it, but records a word ta ta 掉 (= 神气活现大声说话).
About 听, it had two pronunciations in Middle Chinese: one that is 平聲 and another that is 去聲. In most Hakka dialects, including Meixian and Sixian, it is 平聲 for "listen", so our entry is right. It's possible that in Wuhua, the 平聲 reading is lost and only the 去聲 reading is retained and used even for "listen". — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 03:17, 19 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
BTW, for 講嘴里, is 里 the common suffix? If so, we usually write it as 哩 following 五华客家话研究 and other sources on other dialects. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 03:19, 19 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Great information. And I'll remember to write the noun suffix as 哩. —Granger (talk · contribs) 03:37, 19 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
