Etymology edit

Attested as Munnekij in 1899. Difficult to interpret due to a paucity of old attestations. Potentially a compound of monnik (monk) and kade (quay, embankment) or a term denoting an artificial mound used for habitation. An alternative reading of the toponym interprets it as a derivation from a term meaning "dungheap". Compare Munnikij.

Pronunciation edit

  • Hyphenation: Mun‧nic‧kaij

Proper noun edit

Munnickaij n

  1. A hamlet in Drechterland, Noord-Holland, Netherlands.
