Etymology

edit

Attested as Munnicky in 1680. Difficult to interpret due to a paucity of old attestations. Potentially a compound of monnik (monk) and kade (quay, embankment) or a term denoting an artificial mound used for habitation. An alternative reading of the toponym interprets it as a derivation from a term meaning "dungheap". Compare Munnickaij.
