Etymology edit

First attested as oostbrocop and westbrocop in 1320. Derived from a compound of West Frisian nij (nieuw), Old Frisian *brôk (marsh, marshland) and kope (purchase). The element nij was added to distinguish the settlement from Oldeberkoop.
