Etymology edit
First attested as nieholtwolt in 1320. Compound of nieuw (“new”) and either holt (“rising deciduous forest”) or dialectal hol (“low-lying”) and wold (“marsh forest, swamp forest”). The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oldeholtwolde.
