Etymology edit

First attested as nieholtwolt in 1320. Compound of nieuw (new) and either holt (rising deciduous forest) or dialectal hol (low-lying) and wold (marsh forest, swamp forest). The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oldeholtwolde.
