Nijverdal

Etymology edit
First attested as Nijverdal in 1836. Compound of nijver (“industriousness, industry”) + dal (“valley, dale”). Originally founded by the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij to house factory workers. The toponym was coined by the then-mayor of Hellendoorn, who was asked to hold a speech at the opening of a textile mill in the new town.
