Etymology edit

First attested as Iteram in 1143. Compound of op (upper, upstream) and the hydronym Itter. The hydronym in turn derives from either Proto-Indo-European *id- (swell, engorge) or *ajadh- (bright, clear). The prefix op was added at a later date to distinguish the settlement from Neeritter. Compare Itteren and Ittervoort.
