Opitter
Dutch edit
Etymology edit
First attested as Iteram in 1143. Compound of op (“upper, upstream”) and the hydronym Itter. The hydronym in turn derives from either Proto-Indo-European *id- (“swell, engorge”) or *ajadh- (“bright, clear”). The prefix op was added at a later date to distinguish the settlement from Neeritter. Compare Itteren and Ittervoort.
