First attested as De Coedoit in 1573. Derived from oud (“old”) and the hydronym Koedood, potentially derived from a compound of koe (“cow”) and dood (“dead”); the river developed as a result of a major flood in 1373, and the hydronym may refer to cattle killed by said flood.
