Etymology

First attested as asle in the first quarter of the 13th century. Compound of over (upper, upstream) and a compound of Old Dutch asc (ash, Fraxinus excelsior) and lo (light forest). The element over is a late addition to distinguish the settlement from Nederasselt. Compare Assel and Asselt.
