Dutch edit

Etymology edit

First attested as bele in 1188. Compound of over (upper, upstream) and a second component of uncertain etymology. Possibilities include a derivation from a term cognate to buil (swelling) or a derivation from Proto-Germanic *bili- (jutting, protruding). A third etymology interprets biel as "hunting ground".

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˈoː.vərˌbil/
  • Hyphenation: Over‧biel

Proper noun edit

Overbiel n

  1. A hamlet in Berkelland, Gelderland, Netherlands.
