editFrom Pentastoma + -ida, from neuter plural of New Latin pentastomus, from Ancient Greek πεντάστομος (pentástomos, “with five mouths”), from πέντε (pénte, “five”) + στόμα (stóma, “mouth”) + -ος (-os, adjectival suffix), in reference to the four hooks outside of the oral openings that make them appear to have five mouths.
