First attested as De Platluis in 1838-1857. Derived from platluis (“head louse, pauper”), here referring to the poverty of the settlement's inhabitants. The toponym was gradually reinterpreted to a compound of plaat (“sand bar visible at low tide”) and sluis (“lock”).
