Etymology edit

The first genuine instance of the toponym seems to have been the Old Czech Policz in a 1253 document by Ottokar II of Bohemia granting the location the status of locus forēnsis (market-place). Old Czech Policz probably derives from [Term?] (a village on a plain, in open terrain), from pole (field, plain). The nad Metují element is a more recent addition, meaning “on [the River] Metuje”, although that river flows outside the town’s municipal territory.[1]
