According to Leo Spitzer, a diminutive of an unattested Latin *charax, borrowed from Ancient Greek χάραξ (khárax, pole, stick). Alternatively, Coromines proposes the form *caraculum, which he believes is ultimately from a Pre-Roman *kar (“rock”).
