Catalan edit

Etymology edit

Uncertain. Coromines proposes a derivation from Latin *cārāculum from the rare verb cārō (to card [wool]). An alternative favoured by Moll and Meyer-Lübke is a derivation from Latin *characulum, a diminutive of Ancient Greek χάραξ (khárax, pole). Cognate with Spanish carajo, Galician carallo and Portuguese caralho.
