Restructuring of comedere based on conjugations such as comēs (you eat). Cf. potēre < posse.

Pronunciation

edit

Verb

edit

*comēre (Proto-Ibero-Romance)

  1. to eat.

Reconstruction notes

edit

Rhizotonic forms may have had */ˈkɔm-/, as the diphthongization expected of original */ˈɔ/ is found in Asturian.[1] In that case, diphthongization may have been counteracted in Castilian by the following /m/ (cf. hombre < hŏminem).
