Latin edit

Etymology edit

Borrowed from Frankish *hrōk.

Noun edit

*frocum m (Proto-Gallo-Romance)

  1. rook

Reconstruction notes edit

That this was a relatively early borrowing, in spite of the limited distribution of its reflexes, is suggested by the fact that it developed parallel to focum (fire). That is, *frocum > *frueu > *frieu > friu~freu~fru.[1]

Descendants edit

  • Old French: fru, friu, fryu; fros; *freux
    • Middle French: freux, freu
    • Occitan: friè
