Luwian

Etymology

edit

Uncertain, but probably inherited. Possibly related to Ancient Greek ἀμαυρός (amaurós, dark), Latin umbra (shadow, shade). However, Kloekhorst connect this and related Hittite words to Proto-Indo-European *mergʷ- (to flicker; to darken). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)

Noun

edit

*𒈠𒅈𒉿𒋻 (*ma-ar-wa-tar /marwatar/) (nominative-accusative singular)

  1. blackness

Usage notes

edit
  • Only the dative-locative singular is attested.
