Proto-Balto-Slavic edit

Etymology edit

Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁-, likely verbalized from the perfect w-participle[1] (Van Wijk, Stang). Per Derksen, in particular from pre-Balto-Slavic *dʰh₁ēw-[2].

Reconstruction notes edit

Modern descendants point towards columnar circumflex root-stress (except for the infinitive in Lithuanian with ictus on the thematic vowel). Kortlandt considers the circumflex as original for the overall derivational pattern.[3]

Verb edit

*dēwēˀtei

  1. to have set, to wear (stative)

Conjugation edit

Fixed accent.

In modern descendants with i-present and ē-pretarite.
