From Proto-Indo-European *tus-sḱ-yós (“empty”), from *tews- (“to be empty”). Cognate with Proto-Indo-Iranian *tušćyás (whence Vedic Sanskrit तुच्छ्य (tucchyá), Persian تهی (tohi)).
