Etymology
editPersonification of *þunraz (“thunder”). Identified with the Roman deity Jupiter by way of interpretatio germanica in Germanic weekday names (see Thursday), yet otherwise identified with Hercules by way of interpretatio romana. Compare Latin Iuppiter Tonāns (“Thundering Jupiter”).
