Uncertain. Usually regarded as from a Proto-Indo-European root *pel- (to sell) and cognate with e.g. Lithuanian pel̃nas (profit), Proto-Slavic *pȇlnъ (loot), Ancient Greek πωλέω (pōléō, I sell).
